چکیده

H epatotoxicity is an often reported side effect of azathioprine treatment, which requires monitoring of serum transaminases and c-glutamyltransferase (cGT), especially during the first 6 months of treatment. This case report, however, illustrates that side effects of azathioprine can also occur after a longer period of treatment. We report a case of sinusoidal dilatation as a rare side effect of azathioprine treatment in a patient with systemic sclerosis.

The relation between Thiopurine Methyl Transferase activity and efficacy and side effects of Azathioprine in patients with Pemphigus Vulgaris

Background and aim: Azathioprine is the most widely used immunosuppressive agent as an adjunct to corticosteroids in the treatment of pemphigus vulgaris (PV). Thiopurine methyl transferase (TPMT) is a key enzyme in azathioprine metabolism and a genetic polymorphism controls its activity in human tissue. TPMT activity can provide a rational basis to determine suitable dose of azathioprine, theor...

Azathioprine-induced shock in a patient suffering from undifferentiated erosive oligoarthritis.

Shock due to a hypersensitivity response to azathioprine is unpredictable, occurs seldom and bears a potentially fatal outcome. Azathioprine is widely used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and in solid organ transplantation. Here, we present a patient who suffered from undifferentiated erosive oligoarthritis and was treated with azathioprine. This patient developed anaphylactic shock whi...

Peliosis hepatis induced by 6-thioguanine administration.

A patient with acute myeloblastic leukaemia developed jaundice revealing peliosis hepatis after receiving 6-thioguanine for two months. Peliosis hepatis was severe and was associated with mild lesions of centrilobular veins. Withdrawal of 6-thioguanine was followed by a progressive improvement of liver dysfunction. This report shows that 6-thioguanine, a thiopurine already reported to be respon...

Pancytopenia related to azathioprine in rheumatoid arthritis.

Two patients with rheumatoid arthritis developed pancytopenia during treatment with azathioprine 100 mg daily. In one patient this side effect occurred after three weeks, in the other after eight weeks of treatment. Rapid fall of platelets in one patient necessitated platelet transfusion. In the other patient additional treatment with allopurinol was probably responsible for the toxic effect. H...

Severe pulmonary toxicity after azathioprine/6-mercaptopurine initiation for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) are effective in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, between 10% and 29% of patients treated with these drugs are forced to stop therapy due to side effects. Pulmonary toxicity due to azathioprine/6-MP has been reported infrequently. We describe 3 patients who developed severe, noninfectious pulmonary toxicity within 1 month after the initiation o...
